For New Yorkers the closest places to watch more than just a few occasional eagles,
would be along the Hudson River, in and around Croton Point Park, the Croton Reservoir
and, especially, George’s Island Park (as above), which is within a few miles of the
Indian Point nuclear power plant where warmer water attracts more fish during winters.
During very cold days, when much of the river is frozen over, more than a dozen
eagles, adults and juveniles, can be observed, though rarely all in one place.
A similar eagle viewing opportunity used to exist around Haddam Neck in CT (page 4).
That power plant went through years of decontamination and dismantling before
decommissioning was concluded in 2007. Few eagles show up there now, much to the
regret of Birdwatchers and the (once) annual Eagle Festival in and around Essex...
